For Researchers/Trainers

Providing Training

We recommend Research Ethics for All be given to a group of community research partners by experienced research project leaders (often principal investigators or project directors) or research ethics trainers. After completing the training, the project leader or research ethics trainer can provide certification in research ethics education for community research partners. This certification may be used to demonstrate compliance with institutional or funder policies requiring research ethics education, thereby enabling community research partners to take on specific research responsibilities.

People learning on their own can also access Research Ethics for All. However, people learning on their own cannot obtain certification.

To prepare to deliver Research Ethics for All, we recommend trainers:

  1. Decide whether to obtain IRB approval

  2. Decide how to deliver training

  3. Complete the training yourself

  4. Prepare materials for learners

  5. Provide a positive learning environment

  6. Certify learners

  7. Celebrate completion of Research Ethics for All

Certification

After completing the training, work with each training participant individually to check their understanding of essential information required for certification by completing the certification activities.

You can use these certification activities to reinforce learning and provide clarifications. As training participants complete the certification activities, you can prompt recall by asking guiding questions or referring training participants to their workbook materials or specific conversations or experiences your team has had.

The Certification Checklist includes prompts that may support participants’ learning and recall. The checklist also includes the content that should be included in responses to demonstrate understanding. The checklist can be used to document training participant’s understanding. On the checklist you can also check off the prompts used to support the training participant to complete each activity.

When you are satisfied that the training participant has a basic understanding of the content, you can create and download a certificate template to provide to the training participant, save in your files, and submit to your IRB.

The completed full checklist and/or the summary form can be provided to document completion of certification activities should this be requested by your IRB or another entity.

Research Ethics for All was made by people with developmental disabilities, disability service providers, researchers, and IRB administrators and members.
